The town guide

Torrey, Utah

Torrey Utah is a farming settlement of roughly 230 people that ended up as the front door to a national park. It has better food than a town this size has any right to, the strictest lighting rules in the state, and none of the services you would assume a gateway town has.

The short version

A farm town that woke up next to a national park

Settlers arrived in the 1880s and built farms and ranches along the Fremont River, with fruit orchards and alfalfa in the valley bottom. The National Register nomination for the town's old log church records that the townsite went by several names before it settled on one, among them Youngtown, Central, Popular, Poverty Flat and Bonita. Torrey Town says the name it kept honours Colonel Jay L. Torrey, a Spanish American War veteran.

Capitol Reef became a national monument in 1937 and a national park in 1971. That is the hinge the whole town turns on. The orchards are still there, down the road inside the park boundary, and Torrey now makes its living from people who come to look at them.

On population, be skeptical of any single number you read. The 2020 census counted 231. Census Bureau estimates put it above 320 by 2024. The town's own website rounds to about 300, and the county tourism site hedges between 171 and 291. All of those are real figures from real sources measuring different things at different times.

The oldest thing standing is the Torrey Log Church and Schoolhouse on Main Street. Work on it started in September 1898, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 1993, and the local Daughters of Utah Pioneers chapter looks after it. The 1914 brick schoolhouse, a different building, is now a bed and breakfast.

The thing the town is proudest of

What Torrey's dark sky rules actually say

Everywhere mentions that Torrey is Utah's first International Dark Sky Community, certified in January 2018 and the first national park gateway community in the country to earn it. Almost nowhere says what the town had to do to get there, so here it is.

The main provisions of Torrey Utah's outdoor lighting rules as set out in the town's International Dark Sky Community application
Rule What it requires
Shielding Full cutoff fixtures only, designed so no light is emitted above the horizontal. Opaque tops and sides, light pointed at the ground
Color A ceiling of 3000 K correlated color temperature. No cold white light
Commercial brightness 5,000 lumens per net acre unshielded, and 25,000 lumens total
Residential brightness 1,000 lumens per net acre unshielded, and 5,000 lumens total
Curfew Businesses turn outdoor lighting off within an hour of closing. Recreational lighting off by 10pm
Exemptions Holiday lighting from November 15 to January 15, traffic signals, emergency lighting, low voltage path lights under 18 inches, and fixtures under 1,000 lumens with opaque tops and sides
Enforcement A property changing hands must bring its lighting into compliance, and new construction needs a lighting plan approved before occupancy

What it means when you are standing here

Residents worked with the Entrada Institute to replace the town's orange high pressure sodium streetlights with fully shielded LEDs. The practical result is that you can walk out of a restaurant on Main Street and see the Milky Way without driving anywhere, which is not true in most gateway towns.

Capitol Reef itself is a separate designation, an International Dark Sky Park since 2015. Two certifications, two different bodies of rules.

Where these figures come from

The specifics above are from Torrey's own 2018 application to DarkSky International, which is the only public document that spells them out. The town's current municipal code may have been amended since, so treat these as the shape of the rules rather than the letter of today's ordinance.

Better than it should be

Eating and drinking in Torrey

A town of 230 supports two fine dining rooms, a cidery making drink from its own orchards, a proper coffee shop and a burger truck. Seasons and days off are the thing to watch, because several close for winter and others keep unusual weeks.

The drink situation, in Utah terms

Utah rules split by license type, and it catches visitors out. A restaurant can serve you alcohol only if you are dining. A bar has no food requirement but is 21 and over. Packaged liquor comes only from a state store or a package agency.

In Torrey that means the Rock Garden has a full bar, Etta Place is a taproom pouring its own cider, La Cueva runs a tequila bar, Hunt and Gather serves wine and beer but has no bar to sit at and will let you bring your own wine for a corkage fee, and the Chuckwagon store sells beer.

Two practical warnings

No Torrey restaurant we checked publishes a Sunday closure, but the Park Service warns that many local businesses close on Sundays year round, so ring ahead rather than assume.

And the resort restaurant appears under two names in different listings, so if you are told there is no booking under the one you have, ask for the other. Full detail in the restaurant guide.

An hour each, and all of them free or nearly

The useful part

What Torrey has, and what it does not

This is the table we wanted when we first came here. Distances are the Park Service's own, measured from the visitor center.

Services available in Torrey Utah and the nearest alternative for those that are not
Service In Torrey If not, where
Fuel Yes A Sinclair at the Noor Hotel and a Phillips 66 on Highway 24 Hanksville, 37 miles east. None inside the park
Groceries Partly The Chuckwagon General Store, family run since 1973, plus a farm stand and a seasonal market A full supermarket is Royal's Food Town in Loa, 28 miles west
Cash and banking No confirmed branch We could not confirm a bank branch or a reliable ATM in town Bring cash, or draw it in a larger town on the way in
A doctor No Wayne Community Health Center in Bicknell, 18 miles west, on 435 425 3744
An emergency room No The nearest hospital is outside Wayne County Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield, well outside the county

The Park Service puts the seasonal pattern plainly: many local businesses are closed during the winter off season, as well as on Sundays year round. Torrey Town even holds a Season Starter meeting for its tourism businesses each March, which tells you when the commercial year really begins.

Straight answers

Questions about the town

How far is Torrey from Capitol Reef National Park?

The Park Service puts Torrey 11 miles west of the visitor center. The park boundary is closer than that, which is why shorter figures circulate, but the Park Service does not publish a Torrey to west entrance mileage. Either way it is a short drive east on Highway 24.

What is the population of Torrey, Utah?

231 at the 2020 census, with Census Bureau estimates putting it above 320 by 2024. The town's own site rounds to about 300. Figures between 171 and 326 all circulate because they come from different years and different measures.

Why is Torrey a dark sky community?

It was certified by DarkSky International in January 2018, the first in Utah and the first national park gateway community in the country. The town adopted lighting rules requiring full cutoff fixtures, a 3000 K color ceiling, lumen caps and curfews, and replaced its sodium streetlights with shielded LEDs.

Is there a grocery store in Torrey?

There is a general store, the Chuckwagon, with produce, meats and camping supplies, plus a farm stand and a seasonal Saturday market. For a full supermarket the nearest is Royal's Food Town in Loa, 28 miles west. The Park Service describes Torrey groceries as seasonal.

Is there an ATM or a bank in Torrey?

We could not confirm a bank branch or a working ATM in town from any reliable source. Assume there is not one, and bring cash or draw it before you arrive. This is the kind of thing worth getting right rather than guessing.

Where is the nearest hospital to Torrey?

In county care is the Wayne Community Health Center in Bicknell, 18 miles west, on 435 425 3744, which the Park Service lists for basic medical and dental care and a pharmacy. The nearest hospital with an emergency room is outside the county, in Richfield.

Is Torrey worth staying in, or should I stay elsewhere?

Stay in Torrey for a first visit. It has the food, the fuel, the outfitters and most of the beds in the county. The lodging guide covers when the alternatives make more sense and what you give up.

Town history, population and lighting rules on this page come from Torrey Town, the US Census, DarkSky International and the town's own 2018 dark sky application. Services and distances come from the National Park Service local services page. Business hours and seasons come from each business's own website, checked September 2026.
